About Jim Mickelson

Jim Mickelson, a Navy veteran and Cal State Los Angeles graduate, carries a legacy steeped in the rich tradition of embroidery. With a distinguished career spanning over four decades, Jim is a paragon of perseverance and dedication in the embroidery industry. Born in March 1943, Jim discovered his passion for embroidery while selling embroidered caps in 1977 during his tenure at Atlantic Richfield in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. Combining his accounting knowledge with a flair for creativity, he started his own embroidery shop, Northwest Custom Apparel, in Tacoma, Washington, the same year. A self-taught master of the craft, he began with just one embroidery machine. Today, he proudly owns 10 multi-head embroidery machines, 2 Kornit Printers, and leads a dedicated team of 15 employees. Known for his friendly, laid-back attitude, Jim has always prioritized customer satisfaction above all. His belief in the importance of customer service has played an integral role in establishing the reputation of Northwest Custom Apparel. It's this unyielding commitment to his craft and clientele that saw him named 'Embroiderer of the Year' consecutively in 1985, 1986, and 1987. Throughout his illustrious career, Jim has been part of some remarkable projects. He crafted the patches for the University of Washington's football team when they marched to the Rose Bowl in 1991. In the early days of Nike, then known as Blue Ribbon Sportswear, it was Jim who embroidered the iconic swoosh. His reputation and skill set also caught the attention of Komo 4 News when he was creating caps for Seal Team Six. Always willing to share his knowledge, Jim has consulted with numerous startup embroidery shops and DTG printers. He has also been invited to share his experiences and insights at several embroidery trade shows. A believer in continual learning, he plans to continue sharing his wisdom through educational blogs on embroidery. Jim's journey doesn't end here. As he steps into his 80s, he plans to pass the torch to his son, Erik Mickelson, trusting him to take Northwest Custom Apparel to even greater heights. But this doesn't mean Jim will be stepping away entirely. He still enjoys blogging, relaxing at work, and spending Friday afternoons with his buddies. Away from the world of embroidery, Jim is a fitness enthusiast who enjoys a daily ride on his exercise bike. A devoted football fan, he passionately supports the Seattle Seahawks and Washington State Cougar Football. A man of simple pleasures, Jim Mickelson's life and career serve as a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
