Too Many Choices Slow Orders Down
A wholesaler catalog has 5,000 shirt styles. Most customers need one. The problem is not finding a shirt. The problem is finding the right shirt for your specific order, decoration method, and use case.
At Northwest Custom Apparel in Milton, Washington, we have produced custom apparel since 1977. We have embroidered and printed on hundreds of brands. We have learned which garments work with our Tajima TMAR-KC embroidery machine, our Kornit Storm Hexa DTG printer, and our M&R screen printing line. We know which brands cause production delays, quality issues, and unexpected costs.
Northwest Custom Apparel do not offer every brand in the catalog. We offer the brands that produce the best results on our equipment for your specific project. This is not a limitation. It is a filter that protects your order from problems we have already solved.
What Curated Selection Means for Your Order
Consistent Printing Quality
Not all garments accept decoration the same way. A shirt that works perfectly for screen printing may pucker under dense embroidery. A fabric that feels soft for DTG printing may shrink three sizes in the dryer.
We stock brands that we have tested across all our printing methods. We know the shrinkage rates, the dye migration risk on polyester blends, and which fabrics hold stitch tension and which ones distort. When you order from our curated selection, you get a garment that we have already validated for your decoration method.
For example, we recommend Gildan Heavy Blend for budget-conscious bulk orders because the 271 GSM fleece holds screen print ink without bleeding and accepts embroidery without excessive puckering. We recommend Independent Trading Co. SS4500 for premium hoodies because the ring-spun cotton surface is smooth enough for fine-detail DTG printing and durable enough for repeated washing.
Faster Turnaround
When you select from our curated brands, we pull the blanks from our on-hand inventory or order from our established supplier relationships with predictable lead times. When you request a brand we do not stock, we must verify availability, check freight minimums, and often wait for delivery before production can begin.
A rush order for 100 embroidered polos can ship in 5 business days from our curated selection. The same order with a non-stocked brand may take 10 to 14 days just to receive the blanks. Our curation eliminates that variable.
Lower Total Cost
Curated brands allow us to meet freight thresholds consistently. We pass those savings to you. A single shirt ordered from an unfamiliar supplier incurs a $15 to $25 small-order freight charge. That cost either raises your per-unit price or comes out of our margin. Neither outcome is sustainable.
By concentrating our volume with preferred suppliers, we negotiate better pricing, reduce freight costs, and maintain buffer stock for rush orders. The result is lower pricing for you without sacrificing quality.
Our Curated Brand Selection
We do not stock every style from every brand. We stock the styles and colors that cover 90% of our order volume. For specialized needs, we source from our supplier network with the same quality standards.

How We Handle Special Requests
When You Need a Brand We Do Not Stock
Some clients have existing uniform programs with mandated brands. Some have retail partnerships that require specific labels. We accommodate these requests when possible.
The process: You provide the brand, style number, and color code. NW Custom Apparel verify availability with our suppliers. We quote the garment cost plus any additional freight charges. We confirm delivery timeline before accepting the order. Production begins only after the blanks arrive and pass our quality inspection.
This adds 3 to 7 business days to the timeline and may increase per-unit cost by 10% to 20%. We disclose this upfront. No surprises.
When You Need a Style Outside Our Core Inventory
We stock core colors (black, white, navy, heather gray, red, royal blue) in high-volume styles. For less common colors or extended sizes (2XL through 5XL), we may need to special order.
Extended sizes often require separate freight because they are not stocked at the same distribution center as standard sizes. We manage this by consolidating extended sizes into bulk orders or advising clients on size distribution to minimize special orders.
The Inventory Advantage for Your Business
Rush Order Capability
Our buffer stock in curated brands allows us to accept rush orders that would be impossible with special-ordered blanks. A client calls on Monday needing 50 embroidered polos for a Thursday event. If the polo is in our curated selection and the color is in stock, we can meet the deadline. If the client insists on a non-stocked brand, we decline the rush schedule.
Replacement and Overrun Coverage
Production errors happen. A shirt gets damaged during embroidery. A screen print has a registration flaw. A size was ordered incorrectly. With curated brands and buffer stock, we replace the garment from inventory and keep production on schedule. Without buffer stock, we must order a replacement and wait for delivery, delaying the entire order.
Consistency Across Reorders
Businesses with company uniform programs reorder the same garments quarterly or annually. Curated brands ensure that the navy polo ordered in January matches the navy polo ordered in September. Special-ordered brands may change dye lots, fabric weights, or fit profiles between orders. Consistency matters when employees wear the uniform daily.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. We accommodate special requests when the brand is available through our suppliers. Expect longer lead times and potentially higher costs due to freight and handling. We will quote both options so you can decide.
Fabric texture, weight, and content affect how decoration sits on the garment. Embroidery works best on stable, medium-weight fabrics that hold stitch tension without puckering. Screen printing works best on smooth, consistent surfaces that accept ink evenly. DTG requires tight-knit, high-cotton surfaces for sharp detail. Our brand recommendations match these requirements.
Yes. We stock selected organic cotton and recycled polyester styles from Bella Canvas and Alternative Apparel. These options cost 15% to 25% more than standard equivalents. Lead times may be longer due to lower inventory depth. Request sustainable options when you submit your quote.
We work with your existing program. Provide the brand, style numbers, and color codes. We verify availability and quote accordingly. We also offer custom webstores for companies with mandated brands and distributed teams.
Tell us your use case, budget, and decoration method. We recommend the brand that fits. A construction crew needs different garments than a tech startup. A one-time event needs different economics than a quarterly uniform program. Our recommendations are based on what we have actually produced, not catalog descriptions.
